Lewis islanders strike back over Star Wars Sunday cinema

When the curtain goes up on a screening of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on the Isle of Lewis this month the sound of intergalactic conflict is likely to be drowned out by an unholy row*.

Star Wars posterOn a Hebridean island notorious for its stern-faced Sabbatarianism*, the latest instalment of the Star Wars’ franchise is to be shown on a Sunday, to the horror of many of the faithful*.

Leaders of the Free Church of Scotland, dedicated to “promoting the spiritual life of the community”, condemned the screening at the An Lanntair arts centre in Stornoway.

The locals voted with their feet*. The Last Jedi sold out before Christmas. An Lanntair said that Sunday opening was part of a trial and reflected its efforts to be equal and inclusive*.

Jubilant members of the Western Isles Secular Society were more outspoken. “A huge thank you to An Lanntair staff who are making this possible. The force is strong in you,” wrote one contributor to the group’s Facebook page.
