Five Reasons to Backup Your Hadoop Environment - insideBIGDATA

Image
In this special guest feature, Peter Smails, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Datos IO [1] , discusses that in order to achieve enterprise-grade data protection on Hadoop platforms, there are five reasons to consider backup and recovery solutions for big data file systems like Hadoop. A different approach is needed to leverage smaller data sets at high precision. Peter is VP of marketing and business development at Datos IO, provider of the cloud-scale, application-centric, data management platform that enables organizations to protect, mobilize, and monetize all their application data across private cloud, hybrid cloud and public cloud environments. A former Dell EMC veteran, Peter brings a wealth of experience in data storage, data protection and data management. The combined force of social, mobile, cloud and Internet of Things has created an explosion of big data that is powering a new class of hyper-scale, distributed, data-centric applications such as cust

How SAP Hana Is Driving Big Data Startups - DZone Big Data

The first version of SAP Hana was released in 2010, before Hadoop and other big data extraction tools were introduced. While it is an older tool, SAP Hana is still extremely versatile. Many new big data startups are very dependent on it. SAP Hana Provides What Hadoop Lacks For several years, SAP has been positioning Hana as a cutting-edge solution for big data analytics firms. CTO researcher and writer Dan Woods wrote that SAP Hana provides several advantages that Hadoop and other open-source tools can’t address [1] on their own. The biggest limitation is that open-source batch-oriented processing solutions such as Hadoop can’t easily process data in real-time. Woods doesn’t argue that SAP Hana is a replacement for Hadoop. They are both valuable platforms that can complement each other. Apache has been trying to develop a new version of Hadoop that can process real-time data on its own. However, it is unlikely that Hadoop will ever be a real-time data anal

Unapproved stem-cell treatments touted on federal database ClinicalTrials.gov, study says - The Washington Post

Image
Stem cells at a clinic are extracted via liposuction and injected back into the patient as purported treatments for a wide range of ailments. (Patrick T. Fallon for The Washington Post) Stem cell clinics offering unapproved treatments for ailments from hip pains to autism to erectile dysfunction increasingly are using a federal clinical-trials database as a marketing tool — a strategy that confuses patients and exposes them to “unjustifiable” safety risks and high costs, according to a new study. At least 18 purported clinical trials — all of which involve unregulated therapies and require patients to pay to enroll — are listed on  ClinicalTrials.gov, [1]  the comprehensive registry for public and private clinical trials that is run by the National Institutes of Health, according to an article published Wednesday in the journal Regenerative Medicine [2] . Leigh Turner, who authored the study and is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota's Center for Bioethics a

Fast In-Memory NoSQL Database | The Couchbase Blog

In the current internet era, consumers look at a zillion websites and apps before booking a trip; compare prices, reviews, and products before buying anything online; shop for deals and discounts before making an online transaction; and do a fair amount of search on shows and movies before binge-watching them. Hence consumers spend more time browsing online than performing online business transactions. With more and more devices tying consumers to the internet, and with attention spans getting shorter and shorter, applications that are not highly responsive will turn off consumers. Consumers want consistent, online engagement, even when they are not doing any business transactions. Engagement Database With consumer engagement becoming more critical, it becomes more important than ever for applications to be powered by a database that facilitates rich consumer experiences. At Couchbase, we created the world’s first Engagement Database to power applications that deliver rich consu

Database Fundamentals #5: Database Properties - DZone Database

Image
Don’t let the ease of creating databases lull you into a false sense of security. They actually can be very complicated. You can modify and individualize their behavior within your server so that different databases behave in radically different ways. The best way to see all the different manipulations you can make is by opening the New Database window by right-clicking on the Databases folder within the Object Explorer window, assuming you’re already connected to the server. Don’t bother typing anything into the first page. Click on the Options tab on the left side of the window. You’ll see a screen that should look very similar to this: Don’t worry. We won’t be talking about all the possible settings on this page. Instead, we’ll focus on a few that are extremely important and we’ll learn about a few that are going to be covered later in other blog posts. Making changes to database options through the GUI is reasonably straightforward. You’re going to

Introduction to NoSQL and Polyglot Persistence - CodeProject

Today we are facing the rapid expansion of data-driven businesses, especially businesses that are web-based and have an enormous amount of data that is being transferred every second. In fact, almost 90% of all data on the web has been created in the last two years. Usually that data has to be stored somewhere, and usually, that somewhere is a database. Since every business is different, we have different needs when it comes to the ways we want to store the data. There are two routes we can take depending on our needs: Relational Databases NoSQL Further on, I will try to cover the strengths and weaknesses of both, but I’ll go more into the depth of NoSQL databases and why we need to consider them as a solution to our problems. Relational databases Relational databases have been ruling the world since the mid-1980s. Even though somewhere in the 90’s, concepts like Object Databases threatened to take the reign – that never happened. In fact, the relational database conc

How to interview an amazon database expert | Scalable Startups

Whatever the case you’ll need to sift through for the best people. Here’s how. Also: How to interview an AWS expert [3] What database does Amazon support for caching? Caching is a popular way to speed up access to your backend database. Put Amazon’s elasticache behind your webserver, and you can reduce load on your database by 90%. Nice! The two types that amazon supports are Memcache & Redis. Memcache is historically more popular. These days Redis seems a clear winner. It’s faster, and can maintain your cached data between restarts. That will save you I promise! Also: Is AWS too complex for small dev teams? [4] How can I store big da

Voter Fraud Database Tops 1,000 Proven Cases

As the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity [1] convenes its first meeting on Wednesday, the issue of voter fraud in American elections has become even more contentious and hyperbolic. One of the left’s main arguments against reform is that voter fraud simply does not occur. How liberals arrive at this conclusion, we cannot say. Time and again, studies and analyses point to one incontrovertible conclusion: that voter fraud is a real and pressing issue that deserves serious solutions, and The Heritage Foundation has the evidence to prove it. On Thursday, The Heritage Foundation is releasing a new edition of its voter fraud database [2] . Featuring well over 100 new cases, the database documents 1,071 instances of voter fraud spanning 47 states, including 938 criminal convictions. This revamped edition of the database separates cases by type of disposition, allowing readers to easily distinguish not only what type of fraud occurred but the outcome of the case
