Top Questions from Get Started with Big Data in the Cloud ASAP - Webinar Recap - Hortonworks

Last week, we hosted   Get Started with Big Data in the Cloud ASAP webinar with speakers from Hortonworks, Shaun Connolly and Ovum, Tony Baer. The webinar provided a very informative overview around the challenges enterprises are facing with the overwhelming number of choices available in the cloud. It covered how businesses can get over the hurdle so it can focus on a “lift and reshape” cloud strategy that will enable organizations to take full advantage of the benefits of your cloud deployment. [1] Some great questions came across during the webinar and as promised, here is a brief capture of that Q&A and the slides.    What is the best way to choose a right Cloud? As there are many Cloud vendors in the market. A: The best way to start is to understand your cloud strategy over the next few years and work with a vendor that can grow and is flexible with your cloud strategy. Some clients/customers have a preference for a certain cloud vendor(s) de

Hadoop in the Cloud or: the evolution of Hadoop into an API, Capabilities and Components – Orrin Edenfield

This is the second part in a series of posts about the evolution of Hadoop in the cloud. The first post is here [1] . Whenever I talk to a customer or look to solve a challenge I always think it’s best to start with a discussion around capabilities. Capabilities speak to the actual needs and help us not get caught up in a technology discussion or trying to solve the challenge before we fully understand the challenge. When we need to transform large amounts of data or process through large amounts of data in preparation for business centered objectives knowing the capability needs is essential. This is not intended to be a complete or exhaustive capability list. Transforming, querying or processing large amounts of data means storing large amounts of data (also need to know other characteristics like where it’s coming from, the nature of data movement, security requirements, etc. but we’ll start with storing). Historically this was done in either a file system or some kind

Cloudera’s PaaS Targets Big Data Workloads Running in the Cloud

Image
Enterprise cloud [1] company Cloudera [2] ’s new Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) aims to make it easier [3] to run big data workloads in the cloud. The product, Altus, is initially available on Amazon Web Services [4] (AWS) but will expand to support other public clouds including Microsoft [5] Azure, the company said. The PaaS allows data engineers to run Hadoop or Spark jobs in the cloud. Hadoop and Spark are  open-source [6] , distributed database systems designed for interpreting large amounts of data. The company, which went public in April [7] , helped pioneer the market for Hadoop. Data engineers can run Apache Spark, Apache Hive, Hive on Spark, and MapReduce2 through Altus. Cloudera calls these open-source data engines “data pipelines.” Altus executes and manages these pipelines, deploying them on clusters and automating processes like cluster provisioning, configuring, and termination. “Altus allows data engineers to transform data that lands in S3 really fast, and far mor

Multi-cloud application orchestration on Mirantis Cloud Platform using Spinnaker | Mirantis

If there’s one thing that’s become obvious in the last year or so it’s that when it comes to cloud, business success is more than just “installing OpenStack” or “deploying Kubernetes [1] ”; it’s about doing whatever it takes to run applications in the most appropriate environment, and in the most reliable way. At the Boston OpenStack Summit in May, I demonstrated a hybrid cloud application that ran Big Data analysis using a combination of components running on bare metal, in virtual machines, and in containers . In this blog, I’ll explain how that worked. [2] Users aren’t looking for technology Have you ever brought your car to a mechanic and asked for a new oxygen sensor? Of course not. You go in asking for a solution to bad gas mileage or because your check engine light is on. You don’t care how they fix it, you just want it fixed. Customers are the same. They don’t care if they have the very best OpenStack distribution if they can’t get their users to stop dropping their cre

Overview The 25-day quiet period on Cloudera Inc. (NYSE: CLDR [1] ) is set to expire on May 23, allowing the firm's IPO underwriters to publish detailed positive reports and recommendations on the company. Cloudera operates a data management, analytics software, and machine learning platform in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Underwriters (Allen & Co., J.P. Morgan Securities, Morgan Stanley, BofA Merrill Lynch, Citigroup Global Markets, Deutsche Bank Securities, JMP Securities, Raymond James & Associates, and Stifel Nicolaus & Company) have been restricted from publishing research reports on Cloudera since the company's IPO on 4/27; we predict the strong syndicate will be eager to release positive reports and recommendations once restrictions are lifted. Big News In Databases — Spring 2017

Here is the most noteworthy news since my last “Big News In Databases” post from November 2016 . A new SQL standard was released (SQL:2016) In December 2016, ISO released a new version of the SQL standard. It introduces new features such as row pattern matching, listagg , date and time formatting, and JSON support. I've already written about listagg and made a presentation about row pattern matching . Subscribe the modern-sql.com blog for further updates on the new standard. Oracle Database 12.2 on premises, cloud prices double for AWS and Azure Oracle’s cloud strategy was already topic in my previous post : Although the latest database release 12.2 was in November 2016, it was not available for download at that time—it was only available as a service in the Oracle cloud. In January 2017, Oracle effectively doubled the license cost for the Oracle databases in Amazon’s and Microsoft’s cloud environments . And how does Microsoft react? On May 10, Microsoft announced the availabilit
