Bad reasons why you are not a Calvinist | part 2: Predestination and election

Image
http://www.start.urclearning.org/audio/ss_Bad_Reasons_Why_You_Are_Not_A_Calvinist_2.mp3 (28:50) Everyone agrees that the words “predestination” and “election” are in the Bible.  Everyone also agrees that Romans 9-11 is a central passage in understanding what those words mean.  Here, we work verse-by-verse through Romans 9:1-24, in order to show that the straightforward reading of this text indisputably teaches what we today call “Calvinism.” Go to the article

Leadership Lifelines: Prayer, Fasting, and Flexibility

Image
How discipline and commitment prove essential in your leadership ministry. Andy Stanley said, “Leadership is stewardship, and you are accountable,” while speaking to a group of leaders at Catalyst Atlanta in 2006. This quote absolutely resonated with me, because we can forget that as leaders we are responsible for our own leadership. Not only are we accountable to ourselves and those we lead, but most importantly we are accountable to the God that called us to lead. Leadership in its most basic definition is the action or ability to lead a group or organization. Having been in leadership in education, business, the nonprofit sector, and ministry, I know all too well the truth of this statement. You are only a leader if someone is following you, so we need to give attention to how we lead, the impact of our leadership, and the health of our leadership. Leading effectively requires discipline, and I have learned I am most effective when I discipline myself. As a leader, I have found t

If God Is Sovereign, Why Pray?

Image
Nothing escapes God's notice; nothing oversteps the boundaries of His power. God is authoritative in all things. If I thought even for one moment that a single molecule were running loose in the universe outside the control and domain of almighty God, I wouldn't sleep tonight. My confidence in the future rests in my confidence in the God who controls history. But how does God exercise that control and manifest that authority? How does God bring to pass the things He sovereignly decrees? Augustine said that nothing happens in this universe apart from the will of God and that, in a certain sense, God ordains everything that happens. Augustine was not attempting to absolve men of responsibility for their actions, but his teaching raises a question: If God is sovereign over the actions and intents of men, why pray at all? A secondary concern revolves around the question, "Does prayer really change anything?""Let me answer the first question by stating that the sover

Petition backs female-only sports at Olympics, demands suspending transgender rules

Image
The post Petition backs female-only sports at Olympics, demands suspending transgender rules appeared first on Anglican Mainstream . by Brandon Showalter, Christian Post: A new petition is demanding the International Olympic Committee suspend their guidelines on transgender-identifying male athletes for the upcoming games in Tokyo next year. Launched by the nonpartisan coalition Save Women’s Sports , the effort is reasserting the primacy of women’s rights, particularly as it pertains to competitive athletics. Males who present as female is fundamentally unfair, harmful and wrong, the group says. “The transgender eligibility guidelines created by the consensus meeting in 2015, which allows males who identify as females to enter women’s categories, is unacceptable. Simply reducing testosterone levels for one year does not negate the male advantage over female athletes,” the petition reads. “Allowing male athletes to self-identify as female competitors is irresponsible, negligent, a

Joe Biden Selects Abortion Activists to Lead His Team Vetting Potential Running Mates

Image
Joe Biden has enlisted pro-abortion politicians to help him select a vice presidential running mate for his campaign against President Donald Trump. On Thursday, Biden’s campaign announced his choices for the vetting panel, including former U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut and U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware, the AP reports . Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Cynthia Hogan, a Biden aide and former Obama administration advisor, also will help select his running mate. Biden is presumed to be the Democratic presidential nominee because all other major contenders dropped out of the race. In recent months, he has aligned himself closely with the party’s radical pro-abortion agenda and the billion-dollar abortion industry, promising to “codify” Roe v. Wade and force taxpayers to pay for elective abortions. The panel tasked with choosing his running mate shares his views. Rochester has a 100-percent pro-abortion voting record from the National Right to Life Committee. Mos

Spontaneous Love

Love suffers long and is kind… — 1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is not premeditated– it is spontaneous; that is, it bursts forth in extraordinary ways. A Rain of Miracles

Image
By Jeff King 04/30/2020 Washington D.C.  (International Christian Concern) – When I met Oleda for the first time in the final years of her life, she seemed solemn, even cranky. But after spending a bit of time speaking to her, I got a clearer glimpse of her true personality and was drawn to her warm, engaging nature. When our discussion progressed to deep, spiritual things, I found her to be positively sparkling! Oleda came to the Lord in 1955, just before the Cuban Revolution. She was 80 years old when I spoke with her. Thirteen years have passed, and I’m sure she’s with the Lord now. She was in poor health and said, “My body wants to die. I feel like dying, but I am holding on.” She clung to her life in order to remain active in ministry and to finish the race well. I was introduced to her when I requested to speak with someone who was familiar with Cuba’s spiritual history. Given her age and state of health, the secret police wouldn’t imprison her for talking

Productivity Shouldn’t Be Your Pandemic Priority

Signs of Life  content is created in partnership with  American Awakening. Early on in quarantine, our collective American panic took a strange swerve. Maybe you noticed. The initial slew of responses, whether from our employers, the influencer set or the inescapable brands were all focused on how we could keep busy , even if we couldn’t go anywhere.  Maybe it’s not surprising that places like CNN and Forbes dropped articles with headlines like “How to Stay Productive During Quarantine.” A viral internet factoid reminded us all that Shakespeare wrote King Lear while he was in quarantine (“and what have you done?” hardly needed to be said out loud). One “motivational” message shamed the world by telling us all that if we don’t come out of quarantine with a new skill, more knowledge and a new side hustle “you never lacked time, you lacked discipline.” A widely mocked LA Times article even suggested everyone should stop wearing sweatpants and “dress like the adult you’re getting p

U.S. launches second coronavirus task force; Deaf awareness grows

Beyond Our Impatience, Loneliness, and Fear

Image
What if loneliness has an invitation for a great discovery about God? If you go to the grocery store on an empty stomach, you're a sitting duck! You buy everything you don't need. Doesn't matter if it's good for you; you just want to fill your tummy. When you're lonely, you do the same — pulling stuff off the shelf, not because you need it, but because you're hungry for love. For fear of not fitting in, we take drugs. For fear of appearing small, we go into debt and buy the house. For fear of going unnoticed, we dress to impress. But all that changes when we discover God's perfect love. The perfect love that John says "casts out fear" (1 John 4:18). [ LOVE ] Loneliness... Could it be one of God's finest gifts? If a season of solitude is His way to teach you to know His love, don't you think it's worth it? So do I. This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and te

Saying No to ‘Maskshaming’

I roll the windows down and take a long draught of the salt air. I’m stopped at the end of a road that leads to my local beach, my car idling beside the barricades that now block access to the parking lot and sandy path to the water. The airborne nature of COVID-19 has made me question even breathing. But here, just a few hundred feet from the ocean, I know the air is clean. There’s not a person in sight; no need for my face mask here. It’s been a month now since Massachusetts’ stay-at-home orders grounded me in my house. I take walks outside on self-imposed work breaks. But my rural coastal town doesn’t have sidewalks; I can’t walk far. When I need to clear my head, I buckle my kids into the car and drive along the shoreline near my home. Four weeks into quarantine, my weekend joy rides through town are keeping me sane.  All state beaches are closed, so when I get to the barricades, I kill the engine and step outside my car. It feels good to stretch my legs in a place more than a ha

Pray for Compassion and Wisdom Moving Forward for The Jewish Community in Pittsburgh

Image
It's difficult to imagine the gaping hole and raw pain of the family members of those killed in the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. I pray that God gives comfort and courage to move forward. I was impressed and saddened by the reactions of people for a few reasons. First, the response of some of the Jewish people there was incredible. Dr. Jeff Cohen, the President of Allegheny General Hospital, who is Jewish, showed remarkable grace towards the shooter. In a matter-of-fact tone, Cohen said, "He's taken into my hospital and he's shouting 'I want to kill all the Jews.' The first three people taking care of him are Jewish." Cohen and the other Jewish doctors were incredibly successful in saving Robert Bowers' life. These were true heroes in the Pittsburgh hospital.  Bowers was a rabid antisemitic Trump hater and there is a deep antisemitism in many people in the area. One news story mentioned the protests when Trump came to the city to offer condolences an

Where faith comes by hearing

The majority of people in the world belong to oral cultures. For them, faith literally comes by hearing. With this in mind, one of the tools we use to share Scripture with these communities is audio recordings of Bible stories! So how does Scripture go from words on paper to audio? Jo Clifford shares a great step-by-step account of one of the many trips she takes to record Scripture, this time to Mpanda in Tanzania. From invitation to hanging blankets over wooden frames, this is a brilliant window into the world of Scripture audio recording: ‘I regularly receive requests from various language projects to do audio recordings of Scripture. A couple of months before a trip I need to prepare the script of the audio recording – taking the Scripture text and dividing it up into the different characters (narrator, Ruth, Boaz, Jonah etc). Then copies of the parts are given to the different people who have agreed to read for us, so they have time to practice. I discuss with those hosting th

Lebanon at a crossroads

Image
Lebanon (MNN) — Lebanon continues to suffer a severe financial crisis, and citizens have been protesting the new government, which has strong backing of Hezbollah from Iran. Still, the new government won a confidence vote , sparking riots. Tom Atema of Heart For Lebanon says, “They found a Christian to run for prime minister, and he said yes. But he was appointed by Hezbollah. So, he's really a Hezbollah person. Remember, when we talk about Christians in the Near East, we're talking cultural Christians.” The International Monetary Fund is in Lebanon ready to give money, but Hezbollah is unwilling to receive it. Atema says, “Iran wants people to be indebted to Hezbollah and Hezbollah to be indebted to Iran.” Flag of Hezbollah (Image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons) A Crossroads Atema recalls a conversation he had with a higher ranking Lebanese official, who said, “'We've tried everything to fix our economy and our systems, to get rid of the corruption. there is a price, but it is not a sacrifice...

Image
i was pretending to talk, and she was pretending to laugh :) This is a hectic quote by David Livingstone:  "If a commission by an earthly king is considered a honor, how can a commission by a Heavenly King be considered a sacrifice?" <- this fully got to me... Indeed there is no sacrifice... I love my wife who happily married me knowing that I would go from a six figure income to potentially nothing as a full time student (for me, obeying God's commission meant i was to be a pastor which meant that i would have to study at bible college)... I knew she would pay a price to marry me... but i also knew it would not be a sacrifice. but still, i can't believe she married me... with tears streaming down my face, i'm so thankful to the LORD for her... and pray that there never be a day she considers her decision to be a sacrifice she made, but rather, what she said yes to was a future were we will see more of God's immesurable love for us and enjoy his provi
